Counselor

(Full-Time) Phoenix House California is currently seeking a Counselor to work in our California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) program. The CDCR program has established a Single-Level Substance Use and Disorder Treatment (SUDT) program. The SUDT program is designed for offenders who demonstrate the willingness to maintain appropriate behavior to take advantage of such programming and for offenders who have been referred to the program based upon substance use or possession infractions.

The Counselor:

  • Deliver treatment service to Participants;
  • Conduct group and individual meetings;
  • Evaluate and document the progress of the Participants assigned to their groups;
  • Work directly with the Participants to develop and implement a treatment service plan;
  • Coordinate with Transition/Continuing Care Counselor to develop a Community Services Plan and transitional documents, as directed by California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR), for continued community program activities;
  • Work with Participant to create a support network of the Participants pending return to the community; and
  • Shall work collaboratively with the CDCR and institutional staff.

REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION/CREDENTIALS:

The Counselor shall possess high school diploma or its equivalent; and

  • Certified as an Alcohol and Drug (AOD) Counselor, with a certification recognized by The Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) or willing to register upon hire.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of one (1) year experience providing Single-Level Substance Use and Disorder Treatment (SUDT) services to an offender population preferred.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of the dynamics of alcohol/drug related problems and their impact upon patients and their families;
  • The social factors involved in substance abuse;
  • The principles and techniques of rehabilitation counseling and their application to individuals possessing chemical dependencies;
  • Community resources available to persons with alcohol/drug related problems;
  • The physiological and psychological effects of chemical dependency;
  • General social, economic and health problems;
  • Ability to interview and counsel;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others;
  • Communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing;
